Terrapin Beer Co. – Athens, GA – White Chocolate Moo-Hoo –
Ale with Cocoa Nibs and Natural Flavors Added
We haven’t seen the White Chocolate Moo-Hoo since 2013 and this year Terrapin has finally given us more cowbell. Underwhelmingly labeled as an Ale with Cocoa Nibs and Natural Flavors Added, I think it should have been branded as an Imperial Milk Stout, as described on Terrapin’s website.
This Imperial Milk Stout is packaged in a beautifully designed 500ml bottle with a shining cowbell on the front. Poured into a tulip glass directly from the fridge, the color is reminiscent of Coke and for a stout, not the color I was anticipating. Decent head, that seemed foamy, rather than creamy, with several large and thin translucent bubbles that simmered to a thin layer.
Similar to their Moo-Hoochiato, the nose had a nice aroma of cocoa, chocolate milk and chocolate. I wanted to capture a big whiff of these flavors, but they weren’t there. Even after I allowed the beer to warm up, the strength was minute and subtle. The chocolate body was full figured; starting with mellow roasted coffee bean notes and ending with a slight bitter chocolate finish. It concludes smooth and clean as opposed to rich and complex.
Overall, I think more complexity would add to the greatness of this beer and with the alcohol being well hidden at 8.5%, it’s definitely an easy drinker. Perfect for a midnight snack or couple it with a caramel pie, it’d make for a great end to a long night.
